MEDICAL DERMATOLOGY

We now offer red light and narrow band UVB therapy:

WHAT IS POLY RED LIGHT?

Red light is visible light filtered to only emit the color red.  It is part of the sunlight spectrum Our Poly RED light machine has a peak wavelength spectrum of 633nm+/- 10nm.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF RED LIGHT?

It is natural.  It is part of the visible light spectrum of sunlight and because it does not include ultraviolet light, it does not burn or age your skin.  It has minimal side effects, but great benefits.

 WHAT CONDITIONS DOES IT TREAT?

Acne:  Decreases inflammation and bacteria resulting in less acne, redness and oiliness;

Wound healing: Increases blood flow, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and fights oxidative damage;

Anti-Aging: Stimulates the production of collagen and elastin which can reduce the appearance of wrinkles;

Well-Being: Improves mental clarity and confidence, improves general positivity, calm, and reduces anxiety.

MECHANISM OF ACTION OF RED LIGHT THERAPY

  • Activation of hair stem cell via B-catenin

  • Prolongs the anagen or growing phase of the hair

  • Dilates blood vessels to increase blood flow.

  • Release of nitrous oxide which promotes mitochondrial oxidative metabolism & production of growth factors.

  • Red light is anti-inflammatory

  • Stimulates production of collagen and elastin

  • Increases sense of well-being.

WHAT IS NARROW BAND UVB?

NBUVB comprises a small part of the sunlight spectrum which includes UVA, UVB, UVC, visible light and infrared light which is usually felt as heat.  UVC (200-280nm) are the shortest of the UV rays and usually do not penetrate the ozone layer to reach the skin.  UVB (280-320nm) are longer wavelengths that reach the skin surface and can result in burning and signs of aging.  UVA (320-400nm) are the longest wavelengths within the UV spectrum and penetrate deeply into the skin and can cause free radical damage and DNA damage as well as aging.

Narrow band UVB is a small subset of the UVB spectrum emitting only 311-313nm has been found to be safer, more effective with faster skin clearance and longer-lasting remission while minimizing the risk of burning and aging.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS of NBUVB

  • It is natural.

  • It is antiinflammatory.

  • Treats skin conditions that affect large areas of the skin such.

  • Light is only penetrating the skin and there are minimal side effects compared to oral or injectable medications.

  • It comprises a narrow part of the UVB light spectrum so there is less risk compared to natural sunlight.

  • It is done in a controlled setting and minimizes the risk of sunburn and skin cancer.

  • Provides Vit D synthesis.

  • Light provides sense of well-being.

WHAT CONDITIONS DOES IT TREAT?

Psoriasis

Atopic Dermatitis

Vitiligo

Granuloma Annulare

Cutaneous T Cell Lymphoma

Polymorphous light eruption

MECHANISM OF ACTION OF NBUVB

UVB absorption by nucleotides of nuclear DNA results in DNA photoproduct formation.  Mainly, it results in pyrimidine dimers. These photoproducts intrude upon cell cycle progression ending in growth arrest which lowers inflammation, decreases rapid cell turnover conditions such as psoriasis, stimulates repigmentation in conditions such as vitiligo.

  • Induce prostaglandin release.

  • Diminish natural killer cell activity and reduce the immunocompetent.

  • Suppress the mechanism of antigen-presenting cells.

  • Treat eczema, psoriasis, and vitiligo.

YEARLY SKIN EXAMS

Yearly skin exams are recommended to maintain healthy skin and to look for skin cancers and abnormal moles or "ugly duckings" especially in beach communities  like ours.  But did you know that your skin can also be a reflection of other internal health problems?   As the largest organ of the body, it can provide clues to whats ailing you.

Children with numerous moles,  family history of atypical nevi, or large birthmarks should also come in for yearly exams.

Dermatologists are generally known as doctors who treat itches and rashes, but did you know we are also are experts in problems of the skin, hair and nails?   This means that besides common conditions such as acne, rosacea,  warts, eczema, psoriasis, fungus, and skin cancer, we also treat infections such as herpes, allergic reactions like poison ivy, autoimmune conditions like cutaneous lupus, growths like keloids, and pigment problems of the skin, hair and nails.  We also treat disorders of the oral mucosa and groin.
